Cambodia to Double Organic Rice Exports in 2015

One of Cambodia’s two only organic rice exporters is preparing to double its organic rice exports this year as demand for organic rice steadily increases, according to The Phnom Penh Post.

The Cambodian Center for Study and Development in Agriculture, CEDAC, reportedly shipped 540 tons of organic rice to international buyers in 2014 – a 20 percent increase over 2013. CEDAC is set to export 1,000 tons in 2015 to fill the demand in the international market.

Production in organic rice is still quite lucrative because “the price of organic rice is higher and also more stable than non-organic rice in the marketplace,” said CEDAC export officer Sou Sarorn.

Still, senior advisor to the Cambodia Rice Federation, David Van, said the strict regulations and extended grow-time for producing organic rice combined with the lack of education on the matter makes it difficult to find farmers willing to commit to “going green,” and makes large-scale organic rice production limited.  

In 2014, organic rice exports represented only a fraction of Cambodia’s overall 380,000 tons of rice exports.

Cambodia Combats Labor Violations, Protects Workers in Nightclubs and Nightlife Entertainment

Nightclub hostesses and other “adult entertainment workers” in Cambodia now have worker’s rights that are protected under labor laws after a new regulation was enacted on Wednesday, September 8, according to the Bangkok Post.

The regulation was passed in an effort to address labor-related violations that infringe on worker’s human rights, such as sexual harassment and excessive working hours, according to Cambodia’s labor and tourism ministries.

The U.N. released a statement that entertainment workers in Cambodia and throughout the region “face labor-related violations that infringe on their human rights,” and called the new regulation “ground-breaking,” reports the Bangkok Post.

The update to Cambodia’s labor laws is interesting, because labor laws in Thailand typically extend worker’s rights to all laborers working in lawful industries. Therefore, workers in nightclubs would normally be protected under labor laws.

Khmer Rouge Leaders Found Guilty for Crimes Against Humanity in Cambodia

Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan, two former top-tier leaders of the Khmer Rouge regime, which killed roughly 2 million people in Cambodia, have been sentenced to life in prison after a three year trial, reports The Guardian.

Chea, 88 years old, and Samphan, 83 years old, were charged with crimes that happened nearly 40 years ago under the Khmer Rouge regime, including crimes against humanity, homicide, torture, genocide and religious persecution.

Thailand criminal lawyer at law firm Chaninat and Leeds are experienced trial attorneys and handle most criminal offenses.

The Guardian reported that the court’s spokesman, Lars Olsen, called the verdict “a historic day” saying, “the victims have waited 35 years for legal accountability, and now that the tribunal has rendered a judgment, it is a clear milestone.”

Lawyers for the two defendants called the ruling unjust and said they would appeal the verdict, according to The Guardian.
