According to Jonathan Turley, Chai Yan, Hong Kong’s chief executive C.Y. Leung’s daughter, responded to negative comments on Facebook by thanking taxpayers for funding her wardrobe—a comment that is being bemoaned across the internet for its insensitivity amidst the current political protests.

The escalating controversy apparently started with negative comments directed at Chai Yan’s Facebook profile picture, prompting her to post the following status taken in a screenshot from Facebook:
