China Blocks Viral Smog Documentary

The Chinese government banned a documentary about the country’s smog that became viral a week after it originally debuted across official Chinese media, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.


Chai Jing, a former Chinese news anchor, created Under the Dome to raise public awareness in China about its “dependency on burning coal” and regulators’ “weak enforcement of anti-pollution rules,” according to USA Today.


The film quickly became viral after launching on March 1, gaining 200 million views in less than a week before being blocked by the Chinese government from all major websites.

Chinese Police Find 10 Tons of ‘Toxic’ Tofu, Say More on Market

The International Business Times reports a gang in China was busted for violating food safety after police found 10 tons of tofu made with banned food substances, like bleach.

The police believe that 100 tons of the contaminated tofu produced at the gang’s factory in eastern China could still be on the market, according to IBTimes.

The gang reportedly used banned products for food production in the tofu to make it “shinier and chewier.”

IBTimes reports that Chinese authorities believe the scheme was set up by three cousins, and they arrested at least four men in connection with the case.

World Bank Competition: BRICS Nations Create New Bank and $100 Billion Reserve

According to the Bangkok Post, the BRICS nation’s leaders introduced their international financial institutions made to rival the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. 

The New Development Bank and $100 billion Contingent Reserve Arrangement are equally backed by each nation—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—regardless of size, population, or GDP. Together these countries represent 40 percent of the world population and a fifth of the global economy.

Chinese Tourists Behaving Badly In Thailand

NBC News reports that one of Thailand’s most respected universities is coming under siege from Chinese tourists thanks to a recently released Chinese movie, Lost in Thailand, a comedy film which was partially filmed on the Chiang Mai University campus. The film is believed to be China's highest-grossing homegrown movie ever.

Thousands of Chinese tourists have climbed aboard student buses at Chiang Mai University, caused chaos in cafeterias and slipped into classes to attend lectures. Chiang Mai University has now been forced to ban individual visitors, and construct a sign in prominent Chinese characters requesting that passports be produced.

Thai social media bemoaned the Chinese tourists for spitting, littering, cutting into lines, flouting traffic laws and allowing their children to relieve themselves in public pools. China Destroys 6.1 Tons of Illegal Ivory

In 2012, up to 36,000 elephants were killed for their ivory. 

For this first time, on Monday 6 January, China publicly demonstrated how they are supporting stopping the illegal ivory trade by destroying 6.1 tons of seized illegal ivory reports Xi Hua Net. 

Governments across the world are being called on to make the illicit ivory trade and wildlife crime a priority issue, to make a financial commitment to security enforcement and to impose a complete ban on all ivory sales.
