Maui Narrowly Beats Monsanto, Passes Temporary Ban Against GMO Crops

Maui voters passed a ballot initiative in the midterm elections to temporarily ban genetically engineered crops, beating opponents Monsanto and Dow AgroSciences with just 1,077 votes, reports the Civil Beat.

The $8 million campaign launched pre-election by opponents hoping to defeat the bill was backed by Monsanto and Dow AgroSciences and made history as the most expensive campaign effort in Hawaii’s history, according to the Civil Beat.

The race to determine the future of farming in Maui was close and the measure was barely passed by only 50 percent to 48 percent. Greenpeace GMO Papaya Case Ruled Out by Thailand Supreme Court

Acording to Thai PBS, Thailand’s Supreme Court dimissed a lawsuit from Greenpeace over the Department of Agriculture’s role in genetically modified papaya seed farmland contamination.

Greenpeace sued the DOA in 2006 for negligence after the DOA’s GM research allegedly led to the contamination of nearby farms with GM papaya seeds in 2004.

There may be a correlation between GM rice and the rate of leukemia incidences claim students of the Huazhong Agricultural University in China, according to Sustainable Pulse.

The university allegedly served genetically modified rice from the university’s experimental base at the school’s canteen. The students reported that there were 10 incidents of leukemia in a four year period, which is roughly three times the national rate, reports Sustainable Pulse.
