Police Search for Man being Monitored for Ebola in Thailand Over

A Sierra Leone citizen visiting Thailand was found after instigating a nationwide search when he didn’t report for mandatory medical checkups, reports the Bangkok Post.

Samuel Sesay, 31, flew into Bangkok on Nov. 13, and was reportedly taken to the Public Health Ministry upon arrival for further medical examination.

Health officials determined that Sesay did not have any Ebola-like symptoms and was healthy, and released him on Nov. 15, according to the Bangkok Post. As an apparent precaution, Sesay was asked to report for daily medical examinations.

The Royal Thai Police and Immigration Bureau issued an urgent search after receiving a complaint filed by the Bureau of General Communicable Diseases that Sesay reportedly never appeared for further checkups.

Singapore joins Australia and Canada in announcing visa restrictions against travelers from Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea, reports Channel NewsAsia.

Unlike Australia and Canada, though, Singapore did not ban entry of travelers from the three Ebola-hit nations, but rather enforced a visa requirement as of Wednesday, Nov. 5.

In his announcement to Parliament on Monday, Nov. 3, Lam Pin Min, the Minister of Health, said, “The move will allow for better oversight, and control of entry of nationals from these countries, and facilitate possible contact tracing.”

The BBC News reports that residents of Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea will be denied entry to Canada as it suspends issuing visas to countries with widespread Ebola outbreaks.

Canada’s decision follows Australia’s announcement of similar travel bans. Unlike Australia though, Canada will allow visas to be processed on an individual basis and will not restrict entry of Canadian citizens, according to the BBC News.

Australia issued a travel ban cancelling all pending visas for citizens from Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea to reportedly prevent the spread of the Ebola virus into the country, according to BBC News.

Australia will still allow permanent visa holders from the West African countries into the country on the condition of a mandatory 21 day quarantine before entry. 

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the World Health Organization expressed concerns that such travel bans would discourage international health workers from joining the much-needed relief work.
